Giving you access to real workplaces, real mentors and real opportunities.
Leaving school can feel exciting and uncertain. You might know what you want to do or you might still be exploring your options. McCallum’s Youth Employment Assistance program give you time, guidance and real work experience so you can build confidence and take your next step toward employment.
Previously known as School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES), this program continues to support young people transitioning from school into work and remains aligned with NDIS employment support pathways.
Funded through the NDIS under Finding and Keeping a Job Youth Employment Assistance is designed for young people aged 18 to 25 who want help to build work ready skills and move into open employment.

What makes McCallum’s program different?
McCallum offers something unique for our Youth Employment Assistance participants. We have a long history of helping people with disability find meaningful work and we operate one of the largest social enterprise programs in the region. This means you have access to real workplaces, real mentors and real opportunities from the moment you join.
We take the time to understand your strengths, interests and goals. You are not placed into a standard program. You build your own pathway with support from a mentor who knows you and advocates for you.
How we support you
Your mentor works closely with you to explore different types of work and build the skills you need to feel confident in a workplace. Together, you look at what you enjoy, what you are good at and what you want to try next.
You might learn how to:
- travel to and from work
- manage your time and daily routines
- communicate with others in a workplace
- write a resume or prepare for interviews
- understand workplace expectations
- handle money and budgeting
If you want to build specific skills, you may also choose to take part in accredited training such as Food Safety Handling or Barista Training.
Everything you learn is connected to your goals. You are supported to build your own pathway rather than being placed into a set routine.
Real work experience that builds confidence
One of the greatest strengths of McCallum’s Youth Employment Assistance is the access you have to real work environments. Through McCallum Enterprises, you can try a range of different types of work in supportive and inclusive settings. These experiences help you understand what you enjoy and what you want to explore further.
You might spend time in packaging, recycling, timber manufacturing, linen services or document destruction. You might also work in the Golden Opportunity mobile coffee van, where you can learn hospitality skills while serving food and drinks in the community.
If your interests lie outside McCallum Enterprises, your mentor will help you find work experience in open employment. We work with local businesses who want to give young people a chance to learn and grow. We want employers to see your ability and potential and we support them to create positive and inclusive workplaces.
Support that grows with you
Your mentor is with you throughout the program. They help you set goals, build skills and stay connected with your community. They also support you on the job once you find employment so you feel confident and prepared.
The program can support you for up to two years. This gives you time to learn at your own pace and build the independence you need to move into open employment or other employment services when you are ready.
How to get this support in your NDIS plan
These supports are funded under Finding and Keeping a Job in your NDIS plan. If you do not have this funding, you can request it at your next plan review. Your mentor can help you understand what to ask for and how to prepare.
